Radiant Floor Heating: A Different Way To Heat Your Home

Posted on

If you are trying to figure out the best way to heat your home, then there are a lot of options to choose from. While you might have put some pretty serious thought into furnaces, space heaters, and maybe even heat pumps, you likely haven't been exposed to some of the more interesting ways of heating your home. For example, you could use a floor heating system, which can certainly make your home very unique.

What is a floor heating system?

These unique heaters are actually installed beneath your floor, and operate by generating heat and distributing that heat throughout your home. In terms of square footage, they are the largest heater that you will likely consider, since they will actually cover your entire floor. This ensures that every part of your home is given the same amount of heat.

The actual mechanism involved is fairly simple. You can get either a water or electric system, but both work pretty similarly.

How does a water-based floor heating system work?

In the case of water systems, a series of tubes run underneath your floor, with heated water running through each tube. This system circulates throughout your home, with a little bit of the heat escaping the tubes all the time. Water can hold a tremendous amount of heat, which makes this system fairly efficient in terms of the amount of water that you will need to use.

How does an electric coil floor heating system work?

These systems use a series of metal wires beneath your floor, which are used to conduct electricity. This ultimately results in the wires giving off a great deal of heat, which will then heat the floor, and then the rest of your home. Electric heating systems tend to be a little less efficient than water systems, so you will need to keep that in mind.

What are the advantages of a floor heating system?

When using a floor heating system, you can make sure that your entire home heats up at the same rate. As the floor is heated, the heat will then transfer to the cold air that is resting near the floor. As this air heats up, it will rise, pushing colder air down towards the ground. This cycle will repeat over and over, until the air in your home is nice and cozy.

There is also the incredibly satisfactory feeling of waking up in the morning and stepping onto the warm floor. Never again will you need to dread getting out of bed and freezing your toes off on the cold, hard ground. Instead of wearing slippers to keep your feet warm, you can bathe in the warmth of your welcoming kitchen floor as you get your coffee or tea.
